MightyMe is me, and that is all you need to know! Just kidding! Naw, really, MightyMe (yes, that is my given name!) is a relatively new District of Columbia transplant, hailing from an entirely different region of the country. After a meaningless stint in graduate school, which resulted in a meaningless job here in the nation’s capital (right on Capitol Hill, to boot!), I have laid down some roots, or rather, shelled out some money, and purchased an illustrious row house in the once vibrant and now “re-vibing” U Street Corridor.
I find DC to be a very interesting city for a number of reasons, and this whole “gentrification” thing is no exception. If being a gentrifier means that I won’t be using my new abode as the latest crack den or group home for former crack den residents, then so be it. But, ultimately, I have a dream (just like MLK, Jr.!) of a prospering and thriving District of Columbia, that is welcoming and accommodating of all of God’s children, regardless of color, class, culture, and anything else that beings with the letter “C.”
So, why am I blogging about gentrification, a word that makes both gentrifiers and non-gentrifiers a tad uneasy? Because it is so timely! Because I just bought a house in a revitalizing area! Because so many cities are undergoing this “shift,” in which so-called yuppies, professionals, etc. are moving to the city where they can enjoy shorter commutes and enjoy all (or, some) of what city life has to offer! It is particularly interesting because it is viewed as a godsend and also as an evil force, depending on one’s viewpoint and experiences.
So, as I set out on this course and submit posts, I will talk about gentrification and social issues, revitalization projects, renovations…whatever pertains to homeownership in the “up and coming” areas. Forgive me if I stray.
As for my style of writing…it is what it is. I like exclamation marks and ellipses and parentheticals and whatever you see a lot of in my posts. I like to be ironic (seriousness is for the birds). I will be adding more links to other blogs and other links period in the near future (be patient). Just read my blog (I have all of the answers you have been searching for your entire life). Read it and weep, if you like, but still read it.
